I'm wondering if its is possible to change the crosshair size, make it smaller, because in the vanilla version it is too damn large, covering up a lot of the screen ?

I don't think there are any options or console commands for that. You'll need a mod for that.

Besides, you should be playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. without a crosshair anyway. Way more immersive and challenging.

Currently I'm playing with the crosshair disabled, though it's getting difficult with every step.
