Can someone explain the overlays?

This game seems to be different than your typical DOS game so it's hard to compare but in general I prefer stability in games with high performance than fancy graphics. OTOH if stability means less than crashes once an hour or so I would sacrifice some of it in favour of performance due to the immersion killer it is to me.
