So Spore Collection is DRM Free, but you still have to register in-game? I assume this means the game is broken when EA shuts off the online features?

You can play spore perfectly fine without accessing the online features. You do not need to registered with EA. If you do register with them then you can be able to do things like download user created content, additional galactic adventures, and additional EA created content that is not in the game itself but is available online.
