I bought this about a month ago during a promotional period and couldn't turn down the $4 price tag that was shining in front of me. The original campaign was horribly disappointing in terms of both RTS and RPG elements. I played up to level 15 of the Aryn campaign and while found it slightly more enjoyable it still felt like a punishment.

Is Shadow Pheonix worth giving a try? Does it address any of the balance issues of the first two?

The first five Spellforce Games are worth their salt, everything after Spellforce 2 Shadow of Dragon is only for Diahard fans. For SpellForce 3 I can not say anything.
the second expansion for spellforce 1 enables you to upgrade the titan in the first campaign(at least it did when i played it). spellforce 2 is trash. spellforce 3 is good.
