Spellforce 3 was a game I got a bit impulsively during the GOG summer sale in 2021, and I was surprised to see it get a free "Reforced" update, so after having the game sit and collect dust along with its two standalone expansion packs, I decided to finally give it a try ( with Reforced ). It looks like my jam, being a combination of genres that works so well.
Unfortunately, despite having an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6Ghz, AMD RX 5700 8GB, and 16GB of RAM, this game runs absolutely TERRIBLE ( 1920x1080 FreeSync monitor, 75Hz refresh rate ). The video options that affect way too much of the performance are reflection quality, global shadow resolution, and *MAYBE terrain/world detail ( *those settings just seem to make the game stutter a bit on ultra, but not when on high ). It is unacceptable, the visual fidelity and atmosphere of the game is COMPLETELY LOST, when I have to turn global shadow resolution OFF just to get this to run smoothly. I tried turning off V-Sync, and I tried using enhanced sync or freesync. I tried making the game go at 60Hz... which shouldn't even be a thing, because why isn't there a framerate cap option?
This sucks so bad, I already have to deal with feeling like my PC isn't good enough with Guardians of the Galaxy running so badly on my PC, and then Halo: Infinite. I don't need a game FROM YEARS AGO giving me this kind of trouble, a game released before my hardware even came out! I exceed the recommended requirements MASSIVELY, this game should be running on ultra at 75 frames at least which is my refresh rate. But the global shadow resolution kills the performance even at 512!! That is second to the lowest setting!! Why does it kill performance so badly at such a low resolution?! I assume it's an optimization issue, because the shadows are applied to the dense foliage, because when I am nowhere near a dense forest the performance is PERFECT...
Really, someone, anyone, do something so I can enjoy this game instead of just have it sit collecting dust and be a waste of money. I can't get a refund because it's been MONTHS since I got it.
