I just spent a few hours slogging through this nightmarish grindfest of a game (all that walking around, fetch quests, super slow units, etc.. blegh). I had just finished doing the map where you get the first half of the mask of Belial, with the annoying cave system that keeps respawning enemies. The map was nearly complete and the major enemy forces had all been dealt with. I'm getting ready to confront the traitor and.. crash!

Well that sucks. The autosave has an annoying tendancy to save every time I even look at it. I save and exit the game. Autosave saves as well. I get killed and reload a previous save, but autosave has already saved (apparently death has no cost, but I prefer not to die, if possible. It still happens though). So yeah, the autosave is pretty annoying, but it's not there when you need it. I load the latest autosave and I'm in the previous map. What?!

I'm not really sure if I can stand to replay the last 5 hours. The game is a really annoying time sink. If they had just increased the walking speed of all the units it would have helped a lot.

I would take more breaks, but the fog of war resetting after every reload discourages me from that, and makes me want to finish up a map before taking a break.

at any rate... note to self: Save more often, just in case of crashes... >.<
Oh boy, I feel sorry for you.

I think that the autosave in spellforce only saves when you are leaving the game normally (so it's there only to prevent you from leaving without saving) and when the game crashes or you Alt-F4 it there is no autosave.
It's much better to use quicksave (F7) and quickload (F9).
Also there is a penalty for death - you are losing a bit of exp.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try and remember to use F7 and F9 in the future.
I didn't know about the exp loss, but it must be fairly minimal. I'm sure I can make up for it later on when fighting higher level enemies.

I still haven't went back to the game yet. Hopefully I can get past this setback and start slogging through it again. :)
