I have the gog Spellforce installed on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate. The game plays fine but every time i go into options to set the resolution and graphics, sound , etc It ctd. It blames dep so I put Spellforce.exe on the exemption list. No change. Why would the OPTION setting only, crash every time? the stock setttings are too fuzzy on my 1920x1200 desktop. Is there any way to bypass DEP? I can't seem to, if in fact that is the problem. thanks

Try this:
1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.
I can't seem to get rid of DEP. I followed your instructions, still had DEP closing OPTION. I took out [current] at someone's suggestion and still crash when I go to OPTION on the spelllforce menu. I'll keep trying, VISTA can be tamed. Now I'm redownloading and reinstalling. Might be the game or might be my computer, I'm not giving up. Any help appreciated Thanks
Try this:
1. Go to System in your Control Panel.
2. Go to System Protection
3. Under the Advanced tab go to Performance and click on Settings
4. You should see a tab for Data Execution Protection
5. Select the "Turn on DEP for essential Microsoft programs and services only"
Then try playing your game. Let me know if that helps.
This probably isn't the 'fix' you're looking for, but perhaps a workaround is the thread titled:
"Q: Any way to force widescreen video modes" in this forum.
It mentions how to set the resolution through the config.lua file.
I'm putting it on my xp machine. Every other game from gog ran fine on vista which is no small feat. When I get the fix I'll be back. thank you all.
I'm sure it's the game in my Vista Ultimate. I had the game on Steam from before and it does the same thing. So I redownloaded on GOG and got corruption errors every time I downloaded, well tried anyway.. As I type this I'm downloading it on my laptop,Vista Home 64, and plan to transfer it to a flashdrive and then to my other Vista Ultimate 64 machine. The GOG downloader went corrupt and won't work at all in either computer. Even though it run's fine in XP, it's supposed to run in Vista. I'll reload Vista again if I must but it didn't work last time I did.
Every time I hit option in game it crashes....Oh, I tried compatibility mode also. No Difference..I prefer GOG because the files are available without drm.
I don't know if this is the exact same thing, but:
I have Spellforce from GOG installed. I was running the game on a 17'' LCD and i had no problem.
My lcd got weird so i got a new (24'') one.
With the new monitor the game would not start (some error about something) and i had to mess with the config file to change the resolution.
Now the game starts and i can play just fine, but just like lobsta21, the game CTD's if i touch the 'Options' in the menu.
I got it running pretty good on my laptop but my 62 year old eyes revolted. My problem is running on Vista Ultimate.

You mentioned 1900 x 1200 resolution on your desktop.
So that's a 24'' monitor, right ?
Would the game start for you with that monitor or did you tweaked the config file to get it to run (like i did) ?
I'm starting to suspect that this 'options' problem is somehow related to screen resolutions and/or widescreen lack of support.
I just tried with my old 17'' with the default config.ini and the problem went away.
Reconnected the 24'' one, tweaked the config.ini and the problem is back.
So maybe it's not just vista...i don't know.
I'm on XP btw.

The game runs at 1600x1200 tweaked to 1900x1600 but I.m not sure the tweak worked. 1600 was the game option, no widescreen options are offered. Try widescreengaming dot com (google it) for tweaks but back up your files. Some tweaks are an adventure in reinstalling Windows. Back Up!!!!
Edit: Senior Moment(fixed error)
