Only managed to make windowed mode work on win10, and it's far from great. :/

Hej,

no one answered this for ages, so it may no longer be relevant. Nor do I know if it fixes things under Windows - but the blank screen thing happens under Linux too, so this may help:

* Open the cfg.txt in the games directory. Look for Videomode at the start and change that line to "VideoMode=R1"
* Turn off ALL the shadow and graphic effects of the planetary battles (or replace the respective lines in the robot section in cfg.txt with these:
RobotShowStencilShadows=False
RobotShowProjShadows=False
RobotRobotShadow=0
RobotSelectEx=False
RobotLandTexturesGloss=False
RobotObjTexturesGloss=False
RobotSoftwareCursor=False
RobotSky=0
* Change the resolution of the planetary battles to a non-widescreen one. I.e. 1024,768 works, 1280*960 (native resolution of my laptop) doesn't and always crashes.
* You can turn off the starting videos if those blank out in the cfg.txt, too. Change 'SkipIntro=False' to 'SkipIntro=True'

I also encountered the black screen. (I could hear the music, see the cursor, but no image). I waited for about a minute, and the game entered in demo mode. I could play the game again. (Windows 10 Education x64). But the high resolution patch still crashes!!!

I also had a black screen when not in windowed mode.

I was able to fix this by copying the file d3d8.dll into the game directory.

I wont say where I got the file because my source had a file bundled with it that was flagged and removed by my
virus protection, but this is a common dll file and a google search will give you many sources for this dll file.
Had the same error, but was able to get this working by modifying the game (via the properties on the EXE) to run in compatibility mode for "Windows 98/Me".

To do this, go to the directory where the executable is (usually C:/Program Files (x86)/1C Company/Space Rangers 2 - Reboot/) and right-click the Rangers.exe app, then select 'Properties'. This will open a window that should have a 'Compatibility' tab (the one after 'General')-- click on this tab, then check/tick the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:", and click the drop-down below it to select "Windows 98/Windows Me". Then click OK.

It should now work. Best of luck!
