I have had some weird problems with Space Rangers 2. The first problem being the intro movie does not play, i can hear the sound but the screen is dead blank. Well i can look past that problem. The other thing is what's really annoying me. In the training mission where i am to perform some planetary RTS part of the game the game crashes on the loading screen giving me no error message what so ever. I have looked for a solution for this but i am unable to find a proper fix, though it seems other people are having the same problem. Ive heard rumors about some patches or fixes on other forums but they all lead to some Russian support articles which are not much help at all. I have tried changing the resolution and graphic options but with no effect. Also there is a pretty long error note in a text document in the game main folder that appeared after the first crash.

(The game is very interesting so far and i have heard people saying the RTS part of the game is not that great and can be skipped completely if i choose. But i would much rather be the judge of that myself and be able to play the whole game not just half.)

There are ways to translate pages into other languages if that was the problem with the Russian sites.

Also are you running windows 7? I know it says that the GOG version is supposedly win7 compatible but it sounds like a number of people are having issues with it and I even found a Microsoft windows 7 page that said the publisher has stated that it does not work with windows 7. Ideally GOG would have found a work around if they are labeling it compatible but that doesn't mean it always works.

Have you don't the typical driver updating? What video card do you have BTW?
I forgot to mention that this is only a problem when i'm using my laptop. Its a pretty nice piece of equipment and its running on windows vista. There shouldn't be a problem with the drivers and i have tried installing DirectX 9 as recommended on the Russian forums but it didn't change anything. I figured the translate options, but thanks for pointing that out though =).

The funny thing is that i'm home from campus now over the easter time and i tried the game on my desk computer using windows 7 and everything seems to work perfect aside from the intro, but now i'm at least able to hear it.

Since i got it working on one computer i'm happy. (too bad i cant play after i leave here though). I was mostly curious if anybody else using a GOG version was having this same problem with the RTS part of the game. It might be something i'm doing wrong. I will give the drivers another go and see if i can sort it out.
Other people are having the intro video problem, but no solution yet:

As for the problems on your laptop, you may be able to fix them by messing with the cfg.txt file in the game directory. Look for a line called "VideoMode" and change it ffrom R1 to R2 (or the other way around) and see if it helps. There's more info on the cfg.txt flie elsewhere in these forums.
I had problems with my HP NetBook and Space Rangers 2 not starting up. I double clicked on a Desktop icon to start the game and the program icon was on the task bar for 10 seconds then nothing. I looked in the game directory to find an error file that explained I was having video card problems on startup, so I tried the cfg.txt file change. I opened the cfg.txt file and changed the line VideoMode=R2 to VideoMode=R1. I started up the game just fine after that.
it won't let me save changes in the cfg txt. please help.
I've got the same problem, I cant't run planetary quest due to a run time error. Would be glad if someone could help with this, is there a patch for this?

I'm running Windows 7 64bit

yossarian33: it won't let me save changes in the cfg txt. please help.
Make sure that the file is not set to "read-only". Right-click the file, go to properties, and look for a read-only box. If it's checked, uncheck it. It should save now.

EDIT: Also make sure you are editing the file with administrator privileges.

For others, I believe that R1 and R2 are simply two different screen resolutions. If the game refuses to start at all, changing the resolution in the cfg.txt file can help, but for those who are getting crashes only on planetary missions, I think it's probably not the problem.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to suggest other than making sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics cards.
