So you see a mission to kill a ship and it pays a sweet fee, but when you take it the fiend is faster then you and always hares off to different systems. What to do?

1. arm yer ship for the fight.

Dump those indusrty lasers overboard and score yourself a Rethone. a missle laucher and a frag cannon before you take the mission. Later in game get the nasiter weapons to do the deed. Also make sure you have a bot and sheild generator on board. This makes it so you can hang tough in the fight for longer. Longer=dead fiend. Also a fat feul tank to make multi jumps is key to keep up the chase.

2. Catch in in system away from a planet.
If there is no landable planet near, the fiend will head out system where you can use the most important step.

3. Use your engine boost.

On your ships sceen that little button on the left side of your ranger hull, Press it. Yes it will cost you more in repairs when you land but you will be able to close and stay with the pirate, and bring your weapons to bear longer. A Rethone gun while doing less damage cause the pirate to shed speed with every hit. with boost on you will kill the pirate before it jump system, but what if it does.

4. Dogged pursuit.

Never let go of the fiend. Iif he jumps jump with him, and continue the fight, if he is out fuel he will head to the nearest planet. Hit that boost button again and hammer him to bits as he tries to flee. If he turns to jump again follow him till he cant jump no more. If the pirate makes it to a planet, wait for him in space unlesss you need lots of repair and refuel. The fiend watches the docks and will head for space as soon as you land, so waiting for him in space for a few days is better. you will be able to hit him as soon as he leaves. Dont forget to boost. iF he plays hop on and of planet hammer him each time he does till his funds run low then take him as he flees. Hope this helps.
Really good list.

One extra tip:

Make sure to contact any other in-system craft and ask them to help you out (if you have decent relations to them). this is especially helpful when these neutral craft are between your target and the target's destination (out of system, a planet/station, ect.).

Every little bit of damage in these encounters is helpful.
