I have not seen this in the manual and have used the search function in the forum to no avail, so please be kind if this question has already been asked.

Is it possible to play a game for an indefinite period of time, assuming you can confine the Dominators to only a few sectors of space? After you defeat the Dominators, is it possible to continue playing the game as a trader/mercenary?

Edit: Found out the answer from the Quarter to Three boards:

"Depends on the difficulty. On normal and easy you can pretty much do whatever you like for as long as you like. On hard and impossible you'd better get your ass in gear or the Dominators will find you and kill you."
