Is there a problem with Space Quest II or am I just doing something wrong?

When I get to the bottom of the chasm (by falling down the hole in the dark tunnel), I pick up my gem and the two little pink guys jump up. And then they just stand there. If I go into the circular path on the lower right part of the screen, they murder me with slings, but otherwise are completely inactive. They don't do anything and don't respond to me in any way.

edit: nm. I think it's because I missed an entire screen earlier in the game.

Yeap. You were supposed to do something at the beginning when you crash landed on the planet. Failing to do that, they will kill you because you haven't earned their trust
