Has anyone made a sound patch to reinclude the "Where am I" speech sample in Space Quest 3?

I understand it can be heard in mac, tandy, and amiga versions but due to wrong drivers doesn't function in the SB version?

Ok, need to try this out.

But I suppose there is no way to get speech samples + MT32 music?

You can play the game through ScummVM to get the sfx & mt32. Includes the "where am I?" in the intro
Cool, I tried that out.

I'm using Munt and "Putz" (not going to bother trying to spell out the full name) for the MT-32 emulation.

I was able to use the MT-32 Synth Emulator (Windows Midi) option, although the MT-32 Emulator option doesn't work.

Ya, the music sounds very MT-32 esque based on what I listened to using dosbox and Munt. The speech worked, although I didn't hear the neat escape pod door swoosh that you can hear during the MT-32 emulation in dosbox.
Are you using the daily snapshot version? They fixed that issue in the latest beta versions. I also use the mt32 emulator. I have a real mt-32 as well but usually just use the emulated music

Is that the beta 'stable' or non-stable version that I should try?

The link to the stable for 64-bit windows wasn't working for me.
Use the Win32 ScummVM Daily Snapshot (daily repository)
Still get the message; "selected audio device 'MT-32 emulator' cannot be used. See log file for more information...."

Also tested the "MT-32 Synth Emulator (Windows Midi)" option. Still no access to the MT-32 specific escape pod airlock sound effect.

Edit: Ok, did an uninstall, and reinstall, to see if it fixes the problem.

Still the same, above error. No access to the mt-32 specific airlock "swoosh". it's actually completely silent, no use of the adlib style swoosh either.

Edit: Ok, found the issue, had to put the roms into the scummvm folder.

Swoosh now works, since the true MT-32 emulator is working.

BTW, is the any other Sierra/Non-Sierra games with unique MT-32 only sound effects? What kind of sounds should I look out for?

In Ultima Underworld, you get 'foot step' sounds, which is kinda cool.

as far as I know, sq3 was the only one that you had to use scummvm to get the sfx & mt32 to work together. Other games, like the sq1 vga remake, work just fine with both sfx & mt32 through dosbox or what have you.
Well I meant more along the lines is there any special MT-32 only sound effects that I should listen out for when playing old MT-32 games?

That is certain sound effects that are in the game files but that MT-32 then utilizes.

I.E. the airlock swoosh in SQ3, or the foot steps in Ultima Underworld.
A lot of later sierra games did. Like KQ5, KQ6. Codename Iceman had a few.
KQ6, was primarily a General Midi game I think though? That is it the music was designed on General Midi rather than MT-32.

So to hear the music sound the most 'correct' you need to use General Midi, or at least what I've read on some of the Sierra sites.

I suppose that doesn't mean that they couldn't have added in special sound effects only accessible through the MT-32.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MT-32-compatible_computer_games

I'd like to know though what the sound effects are, and what to try to listen for. Might be helpful in adding the information to the various Sierra wikis.

Not true:

You need the MTBLAST.DRV.

I've tried that trick in the past, using the mtblast driver, & I just get a patch error. So I never recommend it. And it's easier to just use scummvm IMO
Get this:
www. spacequest. net/ archives/ sq3/patches/
(had to add spaces since it won't let me post links)

rename your sndblast.drv file.
Copy the IRQ5AND7\SNDBLAST.DRV file (from the 52kb patch at the above url) into the sq3 directory

Edit default.cfg
Change
soundDrv = STD.DRV
to
soundDrv = SNDBLAST.DRV

Run the game!
Awesomeness ensues!

Nice find. Cept for those of us that use a MT-32 for the music. Then it's not really worth the downgrade just to hear one line of speech :-/
