SQ 1 and 2 worked fine, but SQ 3 runs with vertical lines of discoloration symmetrically through out the game. It makes reading any dialogue impossible, and makes playing unpleasant. I have tried running in every compatibility mode, and in 256 colors mode, all of which yield no results.

Has anyone figured out a solution / had similar problems? This is the first GOG game that I have had any trouble with , besides Heroes 3 which was easily fixed by changing the compatibility.

I have attached a picture of said graphical errors. Thanks for the help!

I've got the same problem.

Edit the "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Space Quest 1-2-3\Space Quest 3\dosboxSQ3.conf" with Notepad and change line

output=surface

to

output=overlay

or output=opengl or output=ddraw. The screen proportions could be different in different cases.

It fixed the problem for me.
Maybe just a quick note for Mac users using CrossOver experiencing graphical problems with space quest:

You need to launch the graphical setup first in order to play the game:

/Users/<youruser>/Application Support/CrossOver Games/Bottles/<yourbottle>/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.C^5E3A^5Fusers^5FPublic^5FStart^2BMenu/Programs/ GOG.com/<spacequestcollection>/<thegame>/Graphic+mode+setup.lnk

There you can choose one of the modes mentioned above.
Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm new to Windows so I'm confused how this works. When I try to edit it in notepad and then quit, it gives me a "save as" box (same thing happens if I just select "save"), where I have to select something from the "Save as type:" menu, either saving it as a .txt file (different from what it was originally, so I assume this would cause problems) or selecting "All Files" from the menu. But if I select "All Files" and then hit save, a dialogue box comes up saying "dosboxSQ3.conf already exists. Do you want to replace it?" and if I hit "Yes", another dialogue box comes up with "Notepad" in the upper left, and the message "Access is denied". Anyone know what I should do here to properly edit dosboxSQ3?

EDIT: never mind, did some googling and figured it out--as mentioned on this page, "Usually access is denied is a permissions issue, try right clicking on the file, properties, security and click edit and give all the users full permission". (once you've gone to the "securities" tab of the "properties" window, click on "edit" where it says "To change permissions, click Edit" then click Users, then check off all the "Allow" boxes that are unchecked, then click "OK")

Also, looks like this should be done for SQ 4 and 5 too, according to this thread. And doing it with SQ 6 also improved the graphics for me, no more weird wrong-colored pixels at the edges of certain objects.
