SOLVED - I have searched all the answers previously posted on this and they do not help me solve my save problem...something about the DOSBox virtual drive? When I hit F5, it tells me to save in a directory. I first tried the D:\games directory where I have installed SQ from, but that did not work. So I created C:\save game, and I tried several other folder creations, like D:\Spacequest1\save game. I even created them using the command prompt. But it refuses to recognize any dir I create to save the game. How can I save this game?

Edit - Okay for some reason it saved. I had tried just pushing enter when the default save game path came up and it gave me an error message. Now it's working. Apparently you have to just hit enter when the default path appears when you tap F5.

Yeap, I answered that a while ago. I think in the KQ forums. All you have to have is the \ in the save path, which is there by default, so then all you do is hit Enter. If you want to know why it didn't work when you tried creating those other paths, look at the conf file for your SQ game.
