So I picked this game up today, and have restarted it 3 times now. It seems like I keep messing up my stats. At first I tried to allocate them all evenly, with some emphasis on strength for more damage, but that ended up in horror with me doing little to no damage at all. It just wasn't working out, I thought. I lost too much health each encounter and was burning through food too fast.
So I began a new game and this time put all the beginning stats into Combat and unlocked some new cool moves. Now I was killing the generic brigands in two hits with my dagger thanks to the abilities abilities that Combat unlocked for me.

Then I sort of rushed to meet up with my uncle and I rested, but realized that doing that locked me out of one of the early quest where the guard asked me to clear out some of the brigands that were occupying the village, so I started a new game again so I could get that done.

Anyway, I've been doing a little bit better now, but still feel like I don't have a clear idea of the value of some of the stats. I'm level 3, and the last level I put all my stats into strength, but that didn't seem to make much of a difference in damage. Should I just concentrate mostly on Combat to unlock the new weapon skills? Those seem to have more of an impact in damage than strength.
Any other tips on survival are appreciated. I'm just sort of running around trying things and experimenting. So far I've learned that when fighting Brigands in the farm area, it's best to let them have the high ground. They seem to miss most of their hits that way and I can just whack them without taking much damage. The combat in this game is a bit amazing due to this kind of strategic depth.

The game is hard in the beginning, and the beginning is much longer than you'd think. Experiment, find an approach that works for you. Both combat and magic are very useful, but you'll always run into situations that take a lot of effort to get through.
Also, you don't have to allocate all your skill points. You can save them for a later time to move into a stat that a situation calls for.
I'd say that speed is a good stat to boost when in doubt. I'm at level 3 now with a speed of 15 and that gives my lad a defence of 63 with no armour on at all. Battles are long because of my low strenght, but on average my lad takes two hits per engagement with the red bastards. Which is pretty bloody awesome.
A bit late but a few things helped me a lot when it came to this game.

1) Set up combos for your attacks because you seem to dodge and parry better during combos. Even if its just looping the same move over and over again.

2) Weapon types matter. Swords and daggers suck against skeletons, golems, and heavy armor guys. Maces do a lot more damage against them. The pick axe is a good weapon early game for golems and armored guys and most things in general really.

3) Careful with casting the same type of magic over and over again as it will make you take more damage against its opposite type.

4) Be prepared to run away a lot in the beginning. Sometimes you just need to go in kill one guy and run away to heal up before coming back to kill another one.
