ATI/AMD compatibility notice: Under Windows 7, Soulbringer requires graphic card drivers version 12.10 or older.
nvidia is reverse compatible up to 15 years

It seems that CDPR/GOG are biased towards Nvidia and dismissive towards ATI....

Ironic that all my dosbox games runs flawlessly...
Game is running fine on the latest Win10x64 WDDM 2.0 AMD Catalysts...Had to set the soulbringer.exe compatibility mode to Win95, and a 16-bit, DX7 display mode in the the game's video settings--but runs great with no other files or compatibility settings.

...Still running fine, Win10x64, no compatibility settings, DEP exclusion not necessary (I've found that a lot of games that used to require a DEP exclusion in Win7/8 no longer do in Win10x64), R9 380 4GB GPU w Crimson 16.1 drivers. Compatibility settings: Win95, 16-bit color.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite L505D. I've tried all the suggested fixes in this thread and I still have the same problem. Using compatability mode, anything above Windows 98/ME just does nothing when I click Play. On 98/ME and 95, the game seems to start, the crashes with a message:

Soulbringer: Build WIP 2000.
Fatal Error
Exiting...

Any ideas?

Pretty much everything in this thread and the related Soulbringer threads, except those that suggest downloading specific .dll files.

You shouldn't need the dll's, theoretically....what I meant was have you set-up for 16-bit, D3d display inside the game's internal configuration program that you run before you run the game (not talking about Windows compatibility options)...? You weren't real clear on that...so just checking...

If you are sure you've done that and you still can't get anywhere then you might try the dll's...can't hurt. You know, it really is true that with laptops everything is a toss-up bet because they often require custom drivers for GPUs that aren't available from the ATI or nVidia sites--among other hardware device drivers. If you check most any game forum you'll see that the vast majority of problems--some intractable, some not--come from laptop owners. In your case, not only are you on a laptop, but your OS is *old,* too, which complicates things when trying to find device drivers.

Best of luck, though! The game is charming, I think...! Definitely a slice of gaming history, imo...

Good luck...! Hope you can get it to run...:)
Yes, I did test each resolution under 32-bit and 16-bit settings, and I tested every d3d option. None of these settings seem to work. As for downloading those .dlls, I'm extremely reluctant to download .dlls from just any old link. I've been burned by that before. I've also made sure to test the Windows compatibility modes, and only Win 95 and Win 98 even bother to get the game trying to start up. All the others just do nothing.

Well, if you do download any dll's just make sure to only put them in the game's directory(!) and run them through Defender or your fav AV program before running the game--don't copy them to system32, etc. (Some people actually do that!)
running on Win7 Ultimate 64bit machine with R9 290X flawlessly.
driver version :catalyst 15.7.1

my workaround is,

Step 1:
compat mode to "Win 98/Me" for both of Soulbringer.exe and SoulbringeVCnoeax.exe. (if you're using EAX readied sound card, then SoulbringeVC.exe instead.)

Step 2:
DEP exclusion settings for every exe of Step 1. it might need to reboot your pc.

Step 3:
from Launcher, set "video" option as "Driver:Dx7:Direct3D T&L HAL", and "Mode:1280x960x32". after that, do the "Test" before pressing "OK". if the test succeeded, sure it's "OK".
(4:3 aspect rate should be better. but actually in any resolution of 16/32bit color depth on any Dx6/7 renderer would be fine. only when "Software" renderer had been chosen, i got a famous "Fatal error. Exiting..." popup.)

Step 4 (Optional):
if your security app was under suspicion, try excluding whole game folder from realtime protection.
cuz some included dll's behavior may cause trouble with security app.

that's it. up and running the game.
in my case, there was no need for putting atiumdag.dll in my game folder.

btw, my oldest pc with Radeon 3870 (Win7 pro 64bit) had no compat issue with outdated games including Soulbringer from long years ago. i checked up until Catalyst 12.4 driver. it's the last supported version for Radeon 3xxx series officially.
