[SOLVED] I found help on the official Discord channel:
It is an antivirus problem: the file AkSoundEngine.dll gets falsely recognized as a bitcoin miner. Restoring that file in my antivirus software did the trick.

Right after starting the game the main menu screen loads, but I don't see any of the main navigation items. There's no sound and none of the buttons like "Tutorials" or "Options" are doing anything. See screenshot attached. I also can't quit the game and have to force quit it via Task Manager.

My system:
Windows 10 Pro
Intel i7-6700k CPU @ 4.00 GHz
32GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960

Any suggestions?

EDIT: I'm launching the game via GOG Galaxy.

EDIT 2: what I tried so far:
1. Re-installed the game - no change.
2. updated graphics driver - no change.
3. run game as Administrator - no change.
4. rebooted the system - no change.
