Seriously, don't read below if you haven't played through Solstice at least once. It WILL spoil your enjoyment of it.

With that out of the way...

Why exactly did Galen poison Lev in the first place, and why, despite it supposedly occurring under player control, the player is unaware of either the action or any motivation behind it?

Going by the dream-exchange with Nana, Galen apparently is aware of it, so it doesn't seem to be any magical brainwashing sleeper agent action. In which case, how does Galen, or whomever conditioned him to do the hit, know it was just Lev they should take out?

This is really the only part of the game that I actually disliked, but it was a major one. I'm just wondering if I missed something that would justify the lack of either awareness or feedback to player, because right now it turned a great and enjoyable story into a "wait, what? how?" for me.

Galen didn't intend to poison Lev. He overdid on the sedating agent, maybe because he was annoyed and got sloppy, maybe because he got scared of what Lev could find out or break.

Throughout most of the game Galen suspects what happened, but is in this weird mix of denial and hoping he'll still find Lev alive and that it's not his fault after all.
