I've been playing CRPGs since Ultima, Bard's Tale, and SSI. Since those early years, I've come to expect certain 'perks' -- a short, but succinct user manual, in-game help, control over saved files, and user-friendly amenities, such as highlighting objects and 'loot all'. Most of all, though, I expect a relatively bug-free application. IMHO, Solasta fails in many of those categories.
Before I continue with the negatives, allow me to say that I did enjoy the graphics, plot, and graphics. Also, since I am unfamiliar with 5th Edition AD&D rules, I cannot comment on the game's adherence to them.
Insofar as bugs (or perhaps they are 'features'), some of the most annoying are:
1) The inability to use the Tome of Understanding (how this bug still exists after umpteen patches is beyond me. codewise, it should be similar to the other attribute increasing books with simply a change in the pointer (to WIS, instead of STR, CON, etc.)
2) The mismatching of PC images with the menu bar during combat. Upon multiple occasions I've had my Ranger's image displayed while having my Wizard be the 'active' character. And vice versa. This wouldn't normally be a problem, except when I find my non-melee characters are surrounded.
3) Characters equipping items on their own and reassigning spells. I shouldn't have to check a PC's paper doll to see if the magnificent boots are equipped; they should be the last item in his/her inventory. I shouldn't have to constantly de-select 'Sleep' or whatever.
4) Having to fight previously summoned wind snakes. (Summoning 4 elementals is perhaps one of the most overpowered spells in the game.) There were many times, I summoned them, left the area, traveled for days, returned and had to fight them (presumably because my wizard had lost control), but 'days' is much longer than 1 hour.
5) In at least one encounter at the Shield fortress, I was unable to get all of my characters inside a building before a combat began. While I was fighting the broods that were inside the first room, the ones that were in a second room came out, into the sunshine, and attempted to circle the building to attack the remainder of the party that was outside.
Insofar as 'perks':
1) After awhile I gave up on hitting 'Alt' to get more information. Evidently, no one ever told the developers never to use the word to define the word you are using. I still don't know what a 'viper claw' (or whatever) is. Sure, I can presume it's poisonous, but is it an arrow, dagger, or dart?
2) Either 5th Edition rangers have no animal companions or the developers didn't enable that feature. Sure, I could search the internet for the answer, but I shouldn't have to...the information should be in a short, but succinct user manual, like one of those found in all other CRPGs.
3) I'm 72 and because i have 'lazy eye', I only rely on one eye for everything. Finding little circles of dropped loot, especially in dark areas or nighttimes, is difficult for me. I'm playing a game; I don't need frustrations. HIghlight the loot or allow me to 'loot all'
3) Why must I call up Windows Explorer and search my hard disk to find saved games and characters so I can delete them? Are different OSes that different that the developers can't include that feature?
In conclusion: As I said previously, I enjoyed the game. However, I cannot see myself replaying it (I did start 4 games before finishing the 5th). As interesting as the dialogue was, I do not want to spend most of my game time waiting for the voice overs and LOADING to end. i would recommend people to wait until either the game goes on sale ($9.99 sounds like a good number) or the developers finish patching the game.
