The tunes in the GOG extras sound much better than the in-game music. Is there any way to use these instead?
Anyway, I thought this was the CD version. How come the in-game music sounds like *bad* midi?

I've tried to make the game to use something else than General Midi to play music, but I'm afraid it cannot be done.
I'm afraid tweaking dosbox/config in this case is pointless. I've found this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MT-32-compatible_computer_games
Games that falsely claim MT-32 compatibility
The following games claim to be MT-32 compatible but in fact are not. The most common case is that they allow MT-32 or compatible devices to be chosen as configuration options, but they play General MIDI music instead:
(...)
Slipstream 5000: plays on channels other than 2-10 with inappropriate instruments and missing notes, sends GS reset
(...)
Those (nice, indeed) music files are probably made outside the game, using midi source files and a proper tool. The game itself cannot use sound cards good enough to provide such a great music experience :)
