This is the first game on GOG I've wanted to buy that has achievements that are valuable enough to be considered features but are not kept track of in-game. They show me the paths I've gone down, the paths I've missed, and notable optional scenes. After playing (and enjoying!) the demo I'm under the impression that playing without them is a second-class experience so I want to make sure that I can get them.

I've never used GOG Galaxy before. I usually download the game, install it, and then run the exe. Is GOG Galaxy necessary for achievements to work? I'm confused about if there is something special I need to do in order to collect them.

If you're on Windows, achievements should work, but you'll need to run the game through Galaxy and be online while you play. The game itself will still work offline, and you could always use the achievements list itself as a rough set of hints to find content.

The game does not have ingame achievements so yes, you will have to run it through Galaxy if you want to be able to unlock achievements. If you want to see ingame whenever you unlocked an achievement make sure to activate the overlay in the Galaxy settings. I've finished my playthrough and was able to unlock 25% of all achievements ... so for me they were working just fine.
