I've gone into the Video options and turned the brightness ALL the way up. I'm playing the 2nd level, in the sewer/tunnels next to the Bank. I can't see a blessed thing in the tunnel! Maybe there's an INI setting somewhere? I didn't see anything in the Advanced Video options either.

Anyone know how to make the game brighter?

Use the nglide gamma setting. Should be an ini file for nglide somewhere as it uses v0.99 (not the latest version) which still used an ini to store settings instead of the registry.

Thanks! Couldn't find an INI, but I found an NGlide Configuration program in the Sin Gold folder. That does have a Gamma setting, but it's worthless... it only goes up to 1.2 (from 1.0) and I can't see any difference. 98% of the game is totally fine... but when you get into a dark place it's so totally pitch black that there's literally no way to figure out where I am. Without a map, I have to hope that an enemy shows up and starts shooting, because then I can follow his muzzle flash.

There's a section in the Construction Zone, after blowing a hole in an outside wall and turning on a generator, that lights come on and flicker in a basement area. When those lights go off a few secs later, TOTAL blackness. Had to wait for enemies to find my way out. I guess it doesn't happen too often, but it's kinda freaky when it does.

I have an Nvida GeForce 760 so I will try changing the Gamma settings in the control panel next. I wish there was a way to change the settings just for this game... couldn't see a way to do that. Seems to be all or nothing.

Nglide configuration executable? Maybe GOG updated it to use a later version then. I only downloaded it over the weekend just gone, and not gotten around to installing it yet, but I'll have to check to see what they've done with it.

I wonder if Nvidia Inspector can set gamma for a game profile? I'll take a look when I get back home.

EDIT: Just checked and no, Nvidia Inspector doesn't appear to have an option for gamma either.

Hmm, double check on that gamma setting in the nGlide configurator. I've had a look and it goes from 0.5 to 1.5. However, that is the latest version, 1.02, but I can't see why that would be different for an earlier version.

The setting is stored in the registry at the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zeus Software\nGlide\Gamma

The value goes from 0 to 10, corresponding to the settings for 0.5 to 1.5.

Hey, thanks for the extra info... glad to know where the value is stored! GOG shipped the "nglide 0.99 configurator" with my SiN Gold, and the Gamma setting is a pulldown that goes from 0.8 to 1.2. But I'll try the 1.5 in the reg and see if that takes.

I'm about to play the game some more tonight. I'll also try the Control Panel app and see if I can boost Gamma while I play, then lower it back down.

UPDATE: this configurator version has 5 values in the pulldown, and they are represented by the numbers 0 - 4 in the reg. If I change the 4 to a 5, it freaks out SiN and all screens are black. I'll try the Control Panel and see what happens. Thanks again for the tips!

UPDATE: what seems to work is... to leave the NVidia Control Panel open to the "Adjust desktop color setttings" panel" and when I get to a dark area of the game, ALT-TAB to the panel and increase the Gamma to 1.6 or so. Have to set it back afterwards, but since the panel is open on the desktop when I quit the game, I only need to hit the CANCEL button to return to normal Gamma. A hassle but it works.

In that case, the problem would seem to be the old version of nglide as it would appear to have fewer options for gamma than the latest version. (This might in fact be the cause of the black screen issues some users have experienced as other GOG games do in fact come with the latest nglide version).

Try downloading the latest version from the official nglide site - http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide - and replace the nglide dll files and configurator with those from the latest version. (Alternatively, install the latest nglide and delete all nglide files from the game folder so that it is forced to use the global ones). You should then be able to set gamma up to 1.5.

Good that you have a workaround, though. We've not explored using your monitor's brightness/contrast/gamma settings, mind. Question is whether altering one of those temporarily is easier than alt-tabbing to the nvidia control panel.

If you have any other game with newest nglide, all you need to do is copy and paste these files, overwriting old ones:

nglide_config.exe
glide.dll
glide2x.dll
glide3x.dll

No need for installer. For ex. from GOG Games\Carmageddon 2 Carpocalypse Now to GOG Games\Sin Gold

... Guys, that worked! That was a clever observation Korell on different games using different glides, and you're probably right they overwrite each other! And Henito, I had bought GOG's Carmageddon 2 so I installed CM2 and copied the files over to SiN Gold. Thanks!

You can get the files from the installer if you use 7-Zip to open the installer file. That's how I get my updated nglide files. :)
Great news, glad it fixed it for you.

I sent the info over to GOG support as I confirmed that nglide 0.99 and 1.02 use the same registry entries but with different values for gamma. Unfortunately, they aren't going to update the game to use 1.02 as it caused problems with some of their AMD graphics card test beds.

I think there was a quick AMD fix on gamex86.dll in SiN Resurrected mod, not sure if it solves problem for 3DFX mode as well as Default OpenGL.

I've started playing today myself and I'm using the Resurrected mod. You have to change the renderer to use 3dfxgl as Resurrected replaces the config files with ones that use OpenGL, but other than that it seems to work fine.

That said, I have an nvidia GPU anyway.

I just started playing this evening and did this bit. For me it was dark, but not totally black, and it was only a short section as there was a light in the distance. However, at the very start of that level there are some glowsticks you pick up for your inventory, so you can use them in dark places.
