Have 14 health at the end of this level and saved right before a door with a super guard or whatever. No matter what I do, even if I kill him, I can't last long enough. He's literally right around the corner. No health left in the level anywhere. How frustrating. Died 20 times and called it quits.

This is why it's usually a good idea to have backup saves, like at the start of a level.
What part of the game are you in? are you sure you can't backtrack for any health you may have missed?
