It's almost always split between these two games as which one is the best of the series. 2000 I hear is a much more accessible game and a "nostalgic" favorite, whereas 4 is much more complex with more micromanagement, greater customizability, and generally "more" overall, but that the core game was crap and buggy when it came out and didn't become the great game it was until the Rush Hour expansion was added. Plus there's a ton of mods, some of which is said to be the only way to play it, a la the latter-day Elder Scrolls games.

Of course I imagine 2000 is the more "noob" friendly title but which is really the better game overall? Does 4's depth overshadow 2000's accomplishments in every way or is it too overburdened and complicated with the more streamlined 2000 being the better balanced title?

Btw I am interested in getting one game but not really the other. Just want general thoughts and opinions on these (and pleeaaase don't answer with a "2000 because GOG, while 4 is on crappy DRM'd Steam" kind of sentence, I'd most appreciate it, thanks :))

It's really hard to choose between the two. Lots of memories of 2000 from when I was younger, but SC4 has a lot of depth - it's still accessible, but a lot deeper. The only problem I had with SC4 is getting over some of the problems with the commuter path-finding (such as the infinite commuter loop).

If you go SC4, get a boxed copy, and make sure you get the Rush Hour expansion. There are also some good mods to improve transport systems. However, nothing to fix the commuter bug as that's coded into the exe and not moddable without Maxis releasing the source code.
What do you get with the boxed copy? I know Steam sells it with both the original and the Rush Hour expansion included,. Are there any mods you would consider "necessary" (as in, anything that fixes significant bugs or flaws in the original, adds things that improve the experience to a great degree...)?

I wrote a fairly detailed reply, but my new went down and it lost it, so in short:

There isn't much difference between digital and boxed copy - I prefer boxed as it's useful to have a full manual, especially if you haven't played a SimCity game before.

One thing to consider is that new video cards can cause issues with SC4 if you run it in hardware accelerated mode - however, it is a lot more stable in software rendering and the graphics differential is negligible.

In terms of mods, most people see the NAM (Network Mod) as essential; it improves pathfinding in the city and adds a lot of transport options. It doesn't improve the region wide pathfinding though.

Reddit (or all places) also has a good guide to mods - there's plenty more info on the net, but it's not a bad thread to start with: http://www.reddit.com/r/SimCity/comments/orbt2/the_super_ultimate_awesome_essential_sc4_mod/
