Has anyone checked if this version works on XP. Technically, I can run it on wine, but I prefer more period-correct hardware.

Yes it runs and installs on XP with no problems I've encountered. Just installed and played a bit last night. I only played the original at Level 1, and not the sequel at Level (45?) but I don't anticipate any problems. Good luck!

It's really sad that there is no proper testing of new releases on XP, as even having newer OS available does not make it preferred way to play games.
