I noticed that here in the Silver section there aren't any topics for simply recounting what we like most about the game! So why not here? Reveal the loves and hates of your Silver playthrough(s)! Share your memories of the game right here!

One thing, I suppose if you're going to include key plot elements in your description, just put a little *spoiler* warning with your post, assuming there are people reading who haven't played or completed the game yet!

I haven't played the game in a long time, but I do remember a few things. One amusing memory in particular was my attempt to kill the then-invincible Fuge early on in the game.

You all know the part I'm talking about, where he busts up in the place and does a certain thing, and then chases you around that area until you zone out. Not always feeling up to taking him on directly, I'd run down the stairs, fire pebbles at him with my slingshot for 1 damage, run back up the stairs as he got closer, and repeat xD

Ah those memories... well, actually I wasn't that big a fan of the game when I played the retail version more than a decade ago. I loved the characters and the acting in the German version was incredible. The game actually had several well-known voice actors, most notably the German voice of Nicolas Cage and Vin Diesel as David who sounded absolutely bad ass. I was actually surprised what a wuss he is in the original English version (which I hadn't ever heard until I bought the GOG version). It's one of those few cases where the German voices are definitely more professional than in the original version. The actors even got all the proper instructions (the "what's an incubus? - a demon..." part is even more hilarious there). That said...

Everybody was amazed by the gesture combat but I considered it rather annoying and not at all impressive since I had played Die by the Sword just before I borrowed Silver from a friend. And generally the game seemed too hard for me - I played the game two times and both times I got stuck after receiving the fire orb. I just wasn't able to beat those big wooden fuckers located behind David's house (and my friend only got past that point after receiving help from another guy). Also I didn't like the lack of instructions, I felt totally lost at that point.

And that friend btw never got much further because he had bought a used copy and disc 2 was heavily scratched. IIRC you had to switch CDs upon entering the tavern, so he only got so far. That said...

Still I recalled this game as something great and was really looking up to playing the GOG release - and guess what, it's much easier for me now. I just received the life orb and am having a great time so far. The game and its characters once again totally sucked me in and this time I'm gonna beat the damn thing! :D
"...most notably the German voice of Nicolas Cage and Vin Diesel as David who sounded absolutely bad ass."

Wow, I bet that was epic! I'm rather tempted to buy the German version now! Hehe.

"Everybody was amazed by the gesture combat but I considered it rather annoying and not at all impressive..."

I know, it was sooo frustrating to get the hang of, initially! It was something I wasn't used to, but after a while it did become fun to combo the gestures. My favourite had to be "Left, right, LUNGE!" xD

"I just wasn't able to beat those big wooden fuckers located behind David's house..."

Oh, I remember those bastards! So many of them spawning. That WAS a difficult part of the game. I died many many times, and probably only beat them by the skin of my teeth by eating up all my HP restoration items and sacrificing my team mates xD

Glad you're giving the game another chance :] It's real cool.

Oh, and also..

Grandad: I'm not putting one foot in there. Not unless I can see if it's likely to get bitten off.
David: Don't worry, I doubt any beast would be depraved enough to eat your feet.

Ha!!

This game was phenomenal.

I first played it on the Sega Dreamcast back in 2000, I think. Around this time, I was also playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and Rayman 2, and I remember the Dreamcast being pretty starved for RPGs back then.

Man, this was a good game. We're talking a Final Fantasy VII level of quality here.

It was one of those where-the-heck-do-I-go games, but this encouraged exploration, and exploring the environments of this game is, even today, an amazing and fun experience for me.

I feel the Dreamcast version was a bit more polished. The controls on this PC version are fun, but pretty clunky. Certain camera angles make it very difficult to judge depth, which was always a problem with pre-rendered backgrounds, to be honest.

Still, I'm having a blast playing it. I just got the earth orb and now I'm going to look for any sidequests or anything else I may have missed. Apparently I skipped ahead and am missing an orb.

I remember being sick a lot and playing this game, and as a kid, I remember enjoying it, but also being somewhat underwhelmed by it because I had played Legend of Dragoon a few months prior. But now that I'm an adult, I realize why I stuck with it and enjoyed it so much.

It's got a few flaws, but it makes up for them in some really great ways. Epic boss fights, good pacing, good level design, good balance, good everything. I say "good pacing" because even though the game is pretty bewildering and cryptic at some points, it actually enhances the experience a little bit for me? I like backtracking, and I like the music, and I like how the game has these little lulls where you're not really doing anything but seeing the world. It all makes the world come alive.

I just love how you don't know what to expect. It's like, you're walking through an area, you move to a new screen, and suddenly a boss fight!

I remember beating this on a Saturday night at around 2 AM. I'd been playing it pretty much non-stop that entire week, and was like, "YES! I beat Silver!" to my family. It was pretty funny.

Definitely in my top 10.
I completely agree with you! Silver is quite the gem when it comes to Action RPGs. Spectacularly innovative, gripping, original and chock full of pleasant surprises. I was a particular fan of the voice acting, which I thought was very well done :]

I played it on the PC, and actually I still have the discs. Although they're pretty damaged, and there are several problems with the game when I play, so hopefully I can get it here and all will be well again! It would be so awesome to get back to playing and earn those dual-blades and the lighting orb. Those two items alone made the game about ten times more fun for me, hehe! Although if I remember correctly, Fuge was a bastard to beat.!
*SPOILER*

It's funny you mention that, because I just beat Fuge.

He is *hard*.

We had a ranged battle when I quickly realized I couldn't out-swordfight him. He was firing lightning magic, and I was pressing CTRL+right mouse button to dodge while firing fire arrows at him.

Was pretty cool, but then I ran out of fire arrows and chased him down with my sword and eventually got the better of him.

He's really not *that* hard in a straight melee, but it's better to get an advantage over him at a distance before engaging him directly, I think, because if he gets you cornered and starts basically getting a bunch of free hits on you while you're trying to reposition yourself, it's over.

It's really difficult popping your invisibility ring too, because there's no pause feature in this version like there was in the Dreamcast version, if I remember correctly.

I have to say that Fuge was one of the greatest boss fights I've had in years.

Games back in the day did not mess around, man.

Silver is RPG gaming at its heyday. This was back in the day where secrets were actually okay to put in games, and you could miss stuff if you didn't look thoroughly enough. It makes me feel accomplished when I look at my inventory and have 6/8 magical items, most of which I could've missed if I wasn't thorough enough.
I'm sharing everyone's acclaim of the game. But one thing stands out for me the most in this title, among all the rest which is also great:

The incredible music.

The sound in the Ice Tomb is just... awesome. When I heard it the first time I couldn't believe what I heard. Sometimes music hits you just right, and that track did it for me. And the rest of the game sounds just incredible as well.

I'm currently quite far in the game, and I still love every minute of it. I remember having the Dutch version of the game, where the speech was English but all the text was Dutch. A nice touch!

If this game EVER gets a sequel/remake/whatever, I think I'd blindly buy it.

UNQUOTE

Actually he's not invincible there, I managed to kill him there once. The trick was to fire pebbles at him before triggering the conversation and fight by walking up to him, he'd just stand there and take the hits without doing anything. It takes a really long time to get his health to yellow, orange and then red. As far as I could tell you couldn't kill him like this either, eventually you'd have to walk down the stairs and trigger the dialogue that starts the fight. With his health already in the red from the pebbles however you only had to stab him a couple of times for him to die.

Unfortunately, even if you kill him in the library, the game carries on exactly the same and pretends it never happened.
saw it on a buddys pentium II 400mhz pc with a highend Nvidia gfx card when it was released back in the day and it's visuals blew me away...but seeing it now i don't see why i thought this game showcased his (for the time) powerful pc.
it's just stills and crude 3d characters, surely even a playstation 1 could handle this game? oh well i chalk it down to me beeing ignorant and the pc pentium hype back in the day :)
