The game starts fine, but as to the rest of it... I can't even do the sword training because the radial menu apparently expects a response in under a quarter of a second. So I can't equip the sword or shield thus preventing me from progressing with the game. The laptop that I'm running this on has 1.8 gig dual core athlon processor and an x1200 graphics chipset.

Any help appreciated.

If you have vsync forced off in your graphics driver control panel, you need to set it back to application controlled, or the whole game runs too fast and quite a lot of things get broken.

Saying that, I don't remember radial menus being one of the victims of disabled vsync, so maybe you have a different problem I haven't seen before. :/

Well that worked. It's crazy as I already had it set so that an application could turn it on. Now it's set so an application can turn it off.
