Purchased SH4 for PC. Installed GOG client and downloaded/launched. During launch game is stopped and get notification from BitDefender2020 that malware is detected and files are put into quarantine. Already posted message in BitDefender forums but no response yet. Want to avoid turning off protection just to the play the game.
I'm getting the same with Avira Antivir. As of right now, I wouldn't recommend installing the game unless it has been 100% confirmed that no dubious software code has been smuggled into the exe. Shame too, since I adored the game back in the day.
Same here, installations gets blocked at 99% by avira.

I have the same problem SH4 gets quarantine by Bullguard.
Was hoping to play this on Holloween...
It's false positive, I scanned exe file with Eset Nod32. No threat detected :)
I just wanted to add that as of today (October 26th), Windows Defender has quarantined the .exe for SH4 and flagged it as a trojan ("severe" threat level). I've been playing the game since it released on GOG with no issues and no security flags so I assume it's something to do with a recent update to Microsoft's definitions.

I've seen others saying that it's probably a false positive and that most security software hasn't been flagging it, but since this is a new development for me I'm wary of continuing to play until I know for certain. Anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this? Any chance of an update from GOG to address whatever is causing it to be flagged as such?

I've never had this happen with any other game bought from GOG, falsely or otherwise.
Same here. Purchased the game on day one, and had no problems until today. An hour ago Windows Defender told me that Silent Hill4.exe is a "Severe" level threat (Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.D7!ml). I want to believe it's a false positive but I would like to hear something from GOG before reinstalling it.

Edit: I have checked GOG forums and saw that one the of users did ask GOG Support about this problem and their reply was: 'Our games are thoroughly checked for viruses before launch, therefore we are confident that any warning your software displays is just a “false positive”'. Although it is a different game (Myst), the problem was exactly the same. I was going to post the link too but somehow GOG won't let me, I will add a screenshot instead.

Yep, exactly the same for me! I've attached a screenshot. I haven't opened the game up either. I think there was an update a couple of days agao for Silent Hill 4.

Like you, I've never had an issue like this with GOG.

Really hope GOG does something with this.

I got the same detection (Trojan:Win32/Wactac.D7!ml) and there have other posts about TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen.
I get that faulty positives happen but this is a little concerning
I should add that I still own the original Silent Hill 4 DVD, which actually runs on Windows 8.1 and it does NOT trigger any malware warnings, which means the GOG version might have been tampered with in a harmful way.
Just to follow up on my last post, I contacted GOG customer support about this and got a response saying that it was indeed probably a false positive, and that they had personally installed the game and scanned the folder with eset Nod32 and found nothing. They suggested ignoring the security flags, temporarily disabling the software to play the game if necessary, or using www.virustotal.com to scan the files using a wide range of security software. I haven't tried that yet, but I might in the near future. I'll post again if I do.

I've attached a screenshot of the full response in case anyone's curious. I'd still feel better if the game wasn't setting off these flags at all, but I might cautiously reinstall and hit it with some more scans anyway.

I posted a VirusTotal check in the other virus alarm thread some days ago:

https://www.gog.com/forum/silent_hill_4_the_room/silent_hill_4_the_rooms_executable_contains_a_trojan_according_to_avira/post5

As you can see even Bitdefender and BitDefenderTheta say that the "SILENT HILL 4.exe" is fine. 100 % a false positive if you ask me.
