As far as I've seen there's no fix for this and your save is ruined. Whenever you get a map piece and a full map eventually, for a relative or the villain's hideout it's from a pool of 3-4 different map/location variations. I think this is supposed to increase replay value so next time you play you can't go to the same place and rescue your folk right off that bat.

But this also is a problem because you may get the wrong map-location combination which ends up leading you to a dead-end. For example if your sister is spawned in location a, you're supposed to get map a but you end up getting map b which leads you to nowhere. So if you run into a map where you can't find the coastal landmark or when you find it all the landmarks on the land map is wrong and isn't anywhere near close to the map given, just abandon that game or accept the fact that you won't be able to finish it/save your family.
Ah, sadly the faults of this game shine through after some hours of play :-( which is a pity seeing how fun a lot of it is.
I never ever ran into any bugs (I already own the STEAM version for several years) like you mention here ...

Are you sure, you don't confound things? Not everything drawn in the maps is automatically visible to you while your journey on land. Maybe this makes you think of a bug, which isn't one? Buy artefacts to make them visible.
Agree. Have played this for years and never encountered anything like it. Just remember that there are lot of versions of the landmarks. You have to find that exact combination to find the treasure.
Some locations for either treasure or relative are VERY hard to reach, but years upon years of pirating in this masterpiece, not even once i was unable to find that X. You need good Telescope (to see over distance clearer), one of the bonus items you somehow acquire (dancing? tavern scammer?). You also need to learn to identify landmarks and navigate through thick jungle. Some cities are almost IMPOSSIBLE to reach, because you need to march inside wilderness to reach them, they can't be reached with ship. But you CAN visit them. Takes long but you can do it. The only problem is that their Shipwright offers an upgrade but you can't do it, since your ship is faraway and you went there on foot. Hardest to find are the lost cities, since the jungle is vast, but you can do it easily, if you get the hang of it. Also, easier difficulties allow you more visibility radius, so you can see more territory from above. I play Rogue and i never found the slightest problem, once!

ONLY glitch i ever found, is some pirate leaders spawning in pirate ports that are next to a small canal of water. I was trapped on one bottleneck of sea and land with my fleet for two months, but was ultimately able to escape, even though i needed to use some save/load, eventually.

Remember for maps, to save your game just before beating Raymondo or Montalban. So as to get another chance at an easier map, should you decide to load and challenge again. With this last suggestion, there is not even the smallest chance to fail. Save/Load just before you get a map piece!
