Hey guys, sorry if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find anything on the topic anywhere...

My sister has Civ III Complete on Steam and I have it on gog. We were attempting to play together with me hosting a LAN game (the gog-version doesn't seem to support internet and the steam-version has no DirectIP).

My game appeared in her list but when attempting to join, her game went back to main menu with the message that our game versions weren't compatible.

My question is now: Why exactly is that? I've seen in other threads (can't seem to find it anymore :( ) that "cross-play" between gog and steam has been possible before (maybe before Steamworks added their online support?)

Thanks for any help!

Note: I think we'll try again some time without the steam-version altogether and see if that works. But that's just the status so far.
Note 2: I've seen that DirectPlay is/once was necessary. I only know that I've got it activated. Could the problem lie there?

No. The Steam and GOG versions are different builds and nothing can be done about this. The Steam one was edited to have Steamworks-based multiplayer but removed LAN/direct connection capabilities. The GOG one is unaltered with LAN and direct connection.

You'll have to be on the same version to play together.
