I'd like to make Civ 3 Complete work on my El Capitan Macbook Pro 2012, but so far I've had zero luck. I've tried a few different engines, but the game does not even start on any of them. Wine HQ reports a Platinum rating for the Steam version of Civ 3 Complete on Ubuntu, but so far there's nothing on the GOG version.

Anybody tried it out yet?

It should work. Not that there is a proper OS X report yet, Check out the first report. It notes some workarounds.

Thanks a lot, it does work beautifully!

I was trying to use Civ3Launcher instead of Civ3Conquests.exe, that was the main problem, also made the couple of tweaks to conquests.ini and got rid of the repeating bird sound as instructed in WineHQ.

Ahhhh.
Would someone be able to explain to me the process of installing Civ 3 on wine?

Mac user here.

Download the Civ III installer exe from GOG. Create a new wrapper in Wine, I used engine WS9Wine1.9.8. When it's ready, show wrapper in Finder.

Right click the Civilization III wrapper, click "show package contents" (or something to that effect). Double click the Wineskin program and select Install Software -> Choose setup executable.

Install as you normally do. Choose Civ3Conquests.exe as the launching program.

Do the two tweaks to Conquests.ini as instructed in the "first report" linked to in Gyrion's post.

And here's something from Wine HQ: "To disable the annoying looping bird sound rename ~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete/Sounds/Ambience Sfx/Hawk.wav to Hawk_orig.wav and create a new empty file named Hawk.wav"

I think this is all I did, and it works fine.
