Forgive me if I'm being obtuse here but I have just re-downloaded Alpha Centauri in order to get the full experience with Alien Crossfire. I am now confused on two fronts :

1. When the install finishes I am asked whether I wish to launch the game and am given two options : Alpha Centauri or Alien Crossfire. I choose Alien Crossfire and the game launches fine. I take a look just to make sure everything is working and find I can select several new factions - but none of the original ones. I have never played the game before but is this what I should be finding or should I be able to play as one of the original factions ? Is Alien Crossfire a completely separate game or an add-on / add-in ?

2. When I launch the game a second time I double-click on the desktop icon and the game launches as Alpha Centauri minus the expansion. It seems that every time I want to play AlienCrossfire I will have to reinstall the game because the option to launch Alien Crossfire is only available from the installer at the end of the install. Double-clicking the desktop icon seemingly takes me to vanilla Alpha Centauri.

I'm probably missing something very simple here so apologies if I am.

Well on one count at least I WAS being obtuse as I simply failed to spot that there were two icons on my desktop.
Alien Crossfire has the original factions, but you will not have the same experience with them as the original because the tech tree is modified. One of the reason's I stopped playing Crossfire is you can win an economic victory quite quickly, as it is moved to tech level 3.
When you're at the faction selection screen, there are three buttons up the top. The left one shows the original set of factions, the middle one shows the new set, and the third one is obscured (this one sets all of the factions to "Random").

Unfortunately, these buttons are very dark/faded so it isn't necessarily apparent that they ARE buttons.

This confused me at first too. Next to each faction name is a little pull down menu. You can choose which factions to use in Alien Crossfire by using these pull down menus.
I see the darkened / faded buttons now, thanks for pointing them out. Now I'm off to read the War and Peace-esque manual !
