Just thought I'd share some success I had with the 'terran.exe has stopped working' issue.

Firstly:
I'm using a laptop
I'm running win7
I have the gog version (SMAC & SMACX)
I have edited the ini file to enable desktop resolution

So like a lot of people, everytime I ran the game it would work fine until I moved the mouse cursor to the side of the screen to scroll the map, then the game would crash. So a little workaround I figured out is to simply change the desktop resolution before launching the game. My laptop's normal resolution is 1366x768, I changed it to 1280x720 and now no crashes! I don't know why it works, I guess the game doesn't like the odd laptop resolutions. In any case I've played through 2 games now, once in SMAC and once in SMACX and I've had no issues. I can scroll the map to my hearts content.

Hope this helps some people. Enjoy.
Awesome! It solved the crashes on my tablet PC running Windows 8. Even setting 1360x768 instead of 1366x768 seems to do the trick. Maybe it's related to the onboard Intel Graphics drivers?
Now I'm able to play SMAX on the touch screen without crashes and that's great! :)
Tested it and it works! I also have Intel Graphics and it was always crashing when I tried the widescreen fix so maybe it's specific to Intel? Anyway I think I'll just play in the default resolution with the image scaled up to fit the screen as I don't feel like changing my resolution anytime I want to play.
I've tried a number of different solutions to this problem today, and this one appears to be 100% reliable. Cheers!
Actually, I think the game just has problems calculating window scrolling with odd resolutions ( such as 1366 x 768 vice 1360 x 768 ). I have the same issues with both my Intel onboard chip and my Nvidia graphics card, on both my laptop and desktop. The game runs fine at 1360 x 768, but I found it bothersome to change my desktop resolution to play the game, and then change it back afterwards, so I found a solution that works for me. I downloaded a program called Display Changer. This program will change the display to whatever resolution is called for, launches a program, and changes it back when the program is closed. I dropped the Display Changer executable into my game directory, wrote a small batch file to have Display Changer change my resolution to 1360 x 768 and launch terranx.exe, converted the batch file to an executable, and I use that to launch the game. Works great, and I don't have to hassle with changing the resolution whenever I want to play SMAX.

You must run the game as administrator.

Not that I do, I don't have these kinds of problems. I'm magic.
