This shooter comes from an era of FPS that was totally awesome. Just fun - no one was trying to one-up reality. Military; real world military? Boring as sh*t. Everyone was trying to make a better 3D engine, and come up with more interesting guns than Quake's lightning cannon. And it was awesome. And Shogo kicks ass!
Revisiting it now is a little weird though. Level designs have really come a long way - now, they're designed to walk you through a narrative. Back when Shogo came out, they're just mazes. You're gonna get stuck unless you find, like, a ventilation shaft grate to kick out or something. But that's part of the fun! Immerse yourself, get (literally) lost in a level for awhile. Shoot some brain-dead AI. Feel like a badass and enjoy every second of it.
It's way more arcadey and far faster paced than any modern shooter I can think of. And it has giant robots! That feel exactly like you do when you're not in a mech (no sim elements here). Monolith really came out of nowhere with this one, but it's totally worth remembering. This was before even Bungie tackled Oni - no western developer was even attempting to do an anime aesthetic. But Monolith did the best they could, and while not always successful (it's kinda hard to be when you can only model heads that look like boxes), it certainly is interesting and unique. And the opening theme? Totally memorable.
A very fun game, if you're into this sort of shooter. If you enjoy Quake, Unreal, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, than this is something you need to play. If you've never played any of those, than play Quake first and see if you dig it's arcadey, fantastic, shoot-shoot-shoot vibe. If you do, check out more games like Shogo!
