I am experiencing audio distortion in the in-game voices. Sound in the menu and some in game sound is fine.
I've tried Win 2000 compatibility already, to no avail. The game was set to 95/98 mode beforehand. So there's nothing more I can try in that way.
Is there any way to fix this as there aren't any subtitles so it's impossible to really grasp what's going on.
Essential specs:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
Memory: 3328MB RAM
Page File: 785MB used, 9034MB available
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
SB Live! 24-bit

Have you tried lowering the sound hardware acceleration a bit ?

Yep, and what I got for my troubles was a whole load of graphical glitches. Stretched polygons, namely. It doesn't make sense, I know.
However, fiddling with the graphics settings in the nVidia control panel seems to have resolved that issue. So as it stands, I seem to have both graphical and audio problems under control. If that's the case then I'll post my solution here.

Yep, doens't make much sense...
But if it's working, that's what really matters.
BTW, are you using an audio card or onboard audio ?

It's a proper Audigy PCI soundcard. Although I think it's the value version, if I remember rightly. I have on board audio too, which I may have to switch to in Win7 as the Audigy doesn't seem to be supported any more. But for now it's disabled.

It seems sometimes it's a combination of sound/display settings that delivers the best results regarding both sound and performance

The solution that worked for me immediately was limiting the max FPS.
Open the game -> start a session -> press '~' -> maxfps 55
Trick is done! Sound is great!
