There is a partial circle in the lower left corner of the screen. It clearly means something, but I can't figure out what. What is it?

It's your stamina. Eating or drinking restores some of it, running depletes it. The smaller the fraction of the circle becomes the slower you will run.
It regenerates on its own to a max of 50% (it seems) after a chase. Not sure if it always goes up to 50% if you don't eat anything yourself. Haven't tried to starve yet. :)

I've played though the game at least 10 times already - and now I learn what it is.
well, at least I have more than the color of my fur and the sound of my breath to go on, he he.
and better late than never.
(I thought it was some wierd time keeper that I couldn't figgure out for the life of me.)
