The original Shadowgate was a full lenght adventure game, just like this is. You go around in the castle and castle area, find objects, solve puzzles, try to avoid being killed, cast spells.

The game has a couple of difficulty levels, of which the easiest one is very suitable for novice players, as it's not as punishing with deaths and some of the puzzles are simplified. This also brings some amount of re-playability, as the puzzles differ a bit between difficulty levels or are even removed from easiest levels.
