How do you get back on your ship to sail to the Old World? I can't seem to load my last explorer onto the boat.

make sure you load all cargo (food/trade goods), horses/soldiers/clerics, men in that order, having cargo can keep you from loading horses, while having horses or non explorer crew can keep you from loading the last explorer.

from the sounds of it, you had/have an item still in the expedition and that's keeping you from withdrawing the man carrying it.

Also having natives in your party can be the cause of not being able to board the last man. Drop them if necessary. Once everybody and everything is on board, you're in sailing mode again. Just head east until you get a message to set course for Spain.

It happened to me as well, having everything on zero except a single explorer, to be unable to transfer him on the ship. It appeared there was still some food left, even if it was appearing as zero quantity. So pressing left arrow on food fixed the situation.

Yep, that's the reason. One can oly board the ship once the Exploring Party inventory is at "0%".
