The current (as of today, 2020-08-24) version of TFE and TSE on GOG is pretty much an exact copy of the fully updated retail releases TFE 1.05 and TSE 1.07. The only major difference being the patched out CD checks. (There are also some misplaced files, but they aren't important. See the Locales/eng directory.)
The original Steam release used to be the same, but since then it got two updates.
August 2015
- You can now select widescreen resolutions in the settings. (Previously this was only possibly by manually changing the config files)
- FOV scaling was changed from Vert- to Hor+. In other words playing in widescreen now increases the horizontal FOV, instead of decreasing the vertical FOV.
- GameSpy master server (which was shutdown the year before) was replaced by a community server, fixing the multiplayer server list.
- You can now change the master server using a console command. (/net_strMasterServerOverride="example.com")
- Serious Editor, Serious Modeler and Serious Ska Studio were updated to support 64-bit OSes.
- The aforementioned Locales/eng files were moved to a correct location.
- Possibly other changes? There isn't really an official changelog.
January 2018
- Master server was changed once again, because of some drama. The new server is 333networks.
Since the Steam version is DRM-free, you can effectively upgrade your GOG or retail version by replacing the .exe files in the Bin directory with the Steam versions. No other files have changed from the original release.
