First off, a massive thank you to GOG for getting this game. I've been trying to get my hands on it for 6 years, without success. I paid a company $30 to buy a CD from Amazon America and import it here, but they took the money and vanished. I spun up an XP virtual machine and downloaded a cracked copy, bit it was predictably full of viruses, and didn't work besides. I submitted it to GOG to get, and watched the last CDs disappear from Amazon. Now here it is. Totally a 'TAKE MY MONEY' moment.

I'm downloading it now, but I'd like to know how to mod it to make it playable. 5 years ago it was reported as 'quite buggy', however you had the choice between two mods which made it pretty good: the combined mod, or gentlemen of fortune. TCM seems to be no longer supported, whereas GoF still gets a bit of love, so I'm leaning towards GoF, but if TCM reached some pinnacle of excellence from which any change would be a travesty, that would be good to know.

Of course, any suggestions for other mods I should look at would be nice. How's the resolution, firstly on vanilla, and does GoF bump it? I don't particularly care about massive resolution upgrades, just basic circa-2010 prettyness. my rig's OK, but at this point I'm still running with on-board graphics, although I'll probably add a video card later this year.

The GOF mod actually has been getting more than just a little love. They moved to a new location at BuccaneersReef dot com. If you're into this game I highly suggest you go there and look around and get the newest version of GOF.

Warning: This version known as the ERAS mod is a huge download at over 13GB and unpacked is over 50GB so you need to have the space for it because there are 136 playable captains from history, hundreds of weapons and items and hundreds of ships. Also the mod is set in the Golden Age between 1648-1725 so if you want to sail later Royal Navy ships like the Victory or Surprise or the American Constitution, they aren't in this mod. If you like that later timeframe you should go to Pirates Ahoy and pick up GOF 2,0 even though it hasn't been supported for a while and is much less capable than ERAS.

Good Luck and Happy Gaming
