Something has obviously gone wrong with the ripping of the soundtrack. Each track apart from the last one ends in two loud CD click glitches. Also, why lowly 128kbps CBR MP3? To be honest I wasn't expecting lossless audio (although that would be ideal), but this? The game installation directory looks a bit on the heavy side.. is there a way of getting better audio quality from there by chance?
Yes, there is :) The SCREAMER.gog is actually a BIN (ISO/2352) and the SCREAMER.inst is actually a CUE file. Just load the inst file with ISOBuster or Daemon and you'll get pure uncompressed soundtrack goodness.
Thank you, kind sir.
You're welcome :)
I have to report that the clicks (main point in the original post) are present on the tracks even when listening to the mounted "CD". But I feel much more comfortable editing them out when the source material isn't lossy.

Remember that this was from 1995. Alot of games from that time had issues in the CD Audio music tracks, such as clicks and pauses. If I wouldn't know better, I'd say the belong there so I'd personally leave the tracks untouched :P

raina, I have created FLAC encoded versions with the offending parts silenced, but I can't hand them out to people who haven't bought the game. If you want it, just drop me a line at
com.gmail@hansschmucker (reverse words).
To the rest, I'll send a copy to support so they can put them up.
Heh, for /some reason/ I never heard the CD music back then so I can't compare, but having now redeemed myself, I find myself longing for this imperfection to be fixed. See, I originally thought of the possibility that the glitches could be some sort of custom sync markers for the game and inaudible in it. But after having heard the clicks in-game as well and realizing CD audio wasn't utilized as digital data streams but as a simple analog signal to the soundcard, the possibility seemed less and less likely.
So, either something went wrong when the original was wrapped in shiny GOG packaging or as you say, the glitches were there all along. Anyway, it's a a pity if this can't be fixed, especially when it seems like a fairly simple thing to do. The glitches are heard after the tracks have faded out, so the audio processing involved would be very basic stuff.

Thanks, but I can do that myself. Only the faulty CD image remains a problem. If that can't be fixed by GOG, I shall look into it myself.

I'm playing with MIDI, so I wouldn't know: Do these errors actually appear during the game... because some games just skip the last few seconds of every track anyway... so it might not even be a problem ingame.

They do appear in-game. Normally (=without pausing) you don't get to hear it but that's only true for 3 or 5 lappers, or short runs like time attack. I just raced 25 laps around Lindburg, and sure enough, the glitches were very audible right before the audio track looped.

Would you do the honors and file an issue for it... no need for both of us to do it.
The soundtrack has been fixed now (the noise is also gone) and is of higher quality, using LAME with a VBR profile at about 192 kbit/s (on average).

I really don't know... I've sent them uncompressed versions of the songs, but the ingame issue was (hopefully) filed by raina. I'll redownload the file and see if the errors are still there.
EDIT The issue is still there so I reported it again...

I did report it and got a response that it is being worked on. Sorry for not clearing that earlier.
