In case anyone else just starting this game runs into the same issue I did:

I was stuck at the first step of the tutorial. It prompts you to press your middle mouse button to control your drone... but i do not have a middle mouse button. And there was nothing in the keymapping for "drone control" or anything like that. Well apparently it just wants you to pan the viewpoint around, so arrow keys or whatever you have bound that way.
