Ok, first of all I was always a great adept of adventure games: Gabriel Knight, Tex Murphy, Phantasmagora, Police Quest, Indiana Jones, The Neverhood, etc. All games that mark my childhood and growing ages.
But this one, this one marked me in many ways.
It's premise is very simple: You control the character, talk to npc's, use items to solve puzzles. The camera is in isometric view, and the graphics are, even if dated, aging really well. Nothing easier and this review could very well be about any generic adventure game out there.
But when you start the game and realize you are in a very uncommon sanitarium, Angel statues become living, deformed children play in a city where all grownups are gone and you can become a comic book character, that's when things start to build up.
You start as an amnesiac male, waking up in one of the most weird and disturbing places i've seen in a videogame. Not knowing who you are or where you are, you start talking to other patients only to realize that there is no one sane...but yourself.
This part serves only as an introduction. The real game starts when you travel to a small town and have your first "chit-chat" with the local children. Not wanting to spoil anybody, let's just say you are in for a really insane experience.
The game consists of mainly in-game scenes, but some FMV's show some of the player's flashbacks.
This is one of the best adventure games out there, and even one of the best, atmospheric and rich story games in general.
I can only say that you have to be crazy not to buy Sanitarium.

Indeed you must be crazy not to play this gem of a game!
I played this game many years ago and I loved it. Unfortunately I lost the CD over the years and could never remember the name of the game to buy it again. Now that GOG has it, I feel like I've completed a long quest chain. =D
For now it's on my wishlist, since I have both the original and rereleased boxed versions :)
But for all those, that's never had the pleasure of playing it, you should go get it instantly :D
Seconded. This is an excellent game and everybody needs to play it. :)
I'll admit i pirated this game a while ago, had problems with some conversations skipping and with the videos... but now i'm certainly buying it because
a) I've given up my pirating ways and this game deserves my money moreso then many other games
b) Even if the guilt of pirating it wasnt enough for me to buy the game... getting a version that works fully, with full video is very much worth the money
Last time I played was a couple of years, so it's the perfect timing to play it again :D
Awsome game! Thanks GOG!
man i forgot how good the atmosphere is.. i just got all teary eyed at the end of chapter 4 (just as you give the doll to your sister)

Once I've got the money on my bank account, Sanitarium is the first one i'm gonna buy.

Yeah, chapter four (the one in the old house, after the circus?) is such an emotional part. The artwork, part spooky, part nostalgic, is perfect. It doesn't happen often that a computer game's story line makes me sad, or makes me really feel anything period, but this was one of those moments.
