Hello everybody,
I have some history with Sanitarium - I have been keeping trying to play it for several years now and I have never been able to finish it due to crashes. When I discovered that Sanitarium is available at GOG, I was stunned - finally, I was going to enjoy playing this game.
Now you can imagine my disappointment when I found this game crashing right after the Intro or, if I had been fortunate, right after the video played on VCR in Chapter 1. No chance to get past that one.
I just wondered whether this problem have something to do with codec; the game actually crashes after a cutscene.
(I have Windows XP and dual-ore Intel processor if it is somehow relevant.)

I have been having exactly the same problem in exactly the same place. I am also running XP. I have just read some of the posts about the problem in the forum, and tried changing the compatibility mode from Windows 95 (which seemed to be the default) to Windows 98. Also left Outlook Express running for good measure. Guess what - breezed past the cut scene and on with the game with no problem!! Yippeee!
