I was considering buying Sanitarium when it was on sale, but stopped short when I found that it was not going to work on my computer due to my AMD graphics driver being new, so first off, boo!

That being said, I'm wondering if there were any workarounds to it. After all, it is an older game, so is it possible to run via emulators or anything, or is a patch planned? It is a shame I can't run this, at least for now.

Tried removing atiumdag.dll from the game's directory?

Maybe after doing that try dgVoodoo2 or DXGL?

Don't have a AMD card, but I don't see why that wouldn't work.
im running it ok on AMD 6300 six core processor,

it ran fine for most of the game then started to heavily crash in the last bits (myan village) to the point it would not run anymore. tweaking settings made it run again, what worked for me was:

run as administrator
run in compatibility mode for Windows XP (service pack 2)
disable visual themes
disable desktop composition

still crashed repeatedly even with these settings at the animation heavy part when enabling the earth invincibility spell but keep at it and it will finally work. once i made it past that point ran ok. save game !

i didnt use galaxy to play the game either as galaxy would only bork out when sanitarium crashed

edit: whoops , misread OP post. thought you meant processor. im using AMD Radeon HD 7700 cheers

Sorry to dig this up after so long, but I just finished the game and it made more sense to reply here then start a new thread.

The system requirements currently say, "ATI/AMD - Sanitarium requires graphic card drivers version 13.4 or older". This is a driver version so ancient that it doesn't support my card. I decided to throw caution to the wind and buy the game anyway. It was a bit glitchy, but largely playable.

Windows 10 64-bit
AMD drivers 22.2.1
Installed and launched via GOG Galaxy
No tweaks or mods of any kind
I think there was a performance option in the settings menu that I cranked up to max quality

• Choosing a dialog option would severely slow down animations in the background, until the speech ended and you returned to the dialog choices. Sometimes grating, but a lot of the time I was focused on the conversation.
• The cursor had a dark vertical stripe blinking in and out, on the right side. A minor annoyance.
• Lastly, the worst bug was during the puzzle with the chalkboards. Moving the mouse would corrupt the display, as seen in the screenshot. Thankfully, right-clicking would exit the chalkboard closeup but keep the letters you found. So it was tedious but at least not game-breaking.

That's it. I experienced no crashes or anything else. Sanitarium is currently listed as untested in ScummVM, so maybe that's something to look into if you're having trouble.

I haven't played recently, like within the past 4 or 5 weeks, but my AMD system runs/ran it fine as well. Will test it now.

EDIT: Works on Ryzen 3600/RX 5700 XT

the game runs great using the lightweight ddrawcompat dll. I noticed that with all the detail at maximum effects, the game ran a bit slow or laggy, and the menues suffered of a bit of mouse lag. The dll boosts the performance a lot, menues and ingame.

Other alterative is to use the nightly ScummVM version. It will support officially the game in a near future/weeks
Hard to believe this thread is six years old...;) All but the most recent posts are obsolete!
Does not work for me.
