Does anyone know what mats are and what crafting them achieves?

I used a soul shard to craft one but all I got was scrap material. I don't have a clue what a mat is.

As far as I know, "Mats" are just crafting materials. I can understand your confusion, this confused me as well when I started playing SanctuaryRPG :)

Mat = materials :)

As for the scrap metal, the only use I've found for it so far is turning in two scrap metals in at the blacksmith for weapons. )

The actual craftables are wood planks, rawhide, mithril ore, palladium, and diamonds (mithril, diamonds, palladium , and even silver keys are used in Crafting Kits that you unlock at a higher crafting skill level.)
