GameSpy died 3 years ago. Use a LAN emulator like Evolve, Tunngle or Hamachi.

I tried using all three of those, actually. Neither my friend nor I could see a game to join listing in the Co-Op menu when we tried to play. Is there a How To somewhere we can read up on, or is there something we didn't do right?

Check if your antivirus/firewall is blocking connections to SR2_pc.exe.

Evolve refused to work for us. Hamachi, on the other hand, works great.
When using Hamachi, you need to make sure you can see your friend's computer and they can see your computer and both are green with an IP address before it will work in Saints Row. Once you're connected to each other, just run Co-Op like you normally would and the other player should be able to join.
