Just paid for, downloaded and installed, when i double click desktop icon, i get error message saying "Sacred stopped working".Running vista on an alienware gaming pc.Did the uac thing, didn't work.

Have you rebooted your machine? I had some trouble with the game (menu was blank and ultra-slow) until I restarted Windows. You can also try right-clicking the shortcut and use Run as Administrator. I don't have to do that myself (Vista 64-bit) but it's worth a try.
Also, I run the game from the Games window in Vista rather than a desktop icon (I keep my desktop icon-free). Try running it from there.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but have you tried updating drivers and such?

Are you running xfire when you try running Sacred? It's been known to cause conflicts with Sacred and Sacred 2. If you are, try turning xfire off and then try launching the game.
Also, is there any more info that Windows gives you other than "Sacred has stopped working"?
