"Contrary to popular belief, the S1 Open lobbyserver is still running, but due to some internet issues (that I don't understand, probably involving lapsed payments/bankruptcy/etc) the address "sacredeng.ascaron-net.com" won't reach them. So what you need to do is to change the line in your Settings.cfg file from:
NETWORK_LOBBY : sacredeng.ascaron-net.com

to:
NETWORK_LOBBY : 93.190.65.233

Then make sure the following ports are open:
UDP 2005-2005
TCP 2005-2010
UPD/TCP 7064

If you're still having problems, try disabling your dual/quad core ala this post (I don't know why it works, but if fixed the massive item lag & "network connection lost" issues I was having)."
Nice! It would be cool if GOG could somehow work this change into the game installer.
